What signs can be an indication for sexual problems /signs of sexual problems:

Sexual dysfunction can be any problems that prevent a person or couple from experiencing satisfaction from sexual activity. It can happen during any phase of the sexual response cycle. It prevents you from experiencing satisfaction from sexual activity.

The sexual response cycle traditionally includes excitement, plateau, orgasm and resolution. Desire and arousal are both part of the excitement phase of the sexual response. It’s important to know women don’t always go through these phases in order. Some 43% of women and 31% of men report some degree of sexual dysfunction.

The types of sexual dysfunction-

Sexual dysfunction generally is classified into four categories:

  • Desire disorders: lack of sexual desire or interest in sex.
  • Arousal disorders: inability to become physically aroused or excited during sexual activity.
  • Orgasm disorders: delay or absence of orgasm (climax).

There are a number of causes of sexual dysfunction / signs of sexual problems – They are grouped into two categories:

  1. physical causes and 2. psychological causes.

Physical causes- Urological infections or cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular disease (heart disease and blood vessel disease), High blood pressure, High cholesterol, Hormonal imbalances, Alcoholism, Drug abuse, Neurological disorders, Chronic diseases, such as kidney failure, Nerve damage.

Psychological Causes- Many people have psychologically induced sexual dysfunction. Things like concern about sexual performance, feelings of guilt about sexual desire and activity, relationship problems, depression, stress, anxiety self-esteem or body image issues, and the effects of past sexual trauma, such as rape, molestation or a negative sexual experience can all have a negative effect on sexual function.

Sexual dysfunction can affect any age, although it is more common in those over 40 because it’s often related to a decline in health associated with aging.

How sexual dysfunction is diagnosed-

In most cases, you recognize something’s interfering with your enjoyment (or a partner’s enjoyment) of a sexual relationship. Your provider usually begins with a complete history of symptoms and a physical. They may order diagnostic tests to rule out medical problems that may be contributing to the dysfunction. Typically lab testing plays a very limited role in the diagnosis of sexual dysfunction.

An evaluation of about sex, as well as other possible contributing factors like fear, anxiety, past sexual trauma/abuse, relationship concerns, medications, alcohol or drug abuse, etc. — help a clinician understand the underlying cause of the problem and recommend the right treatment.

Treatment of sexual dysfunction-

Sexual dysfunction is normally treated by correcting or addressing the underlying problem or problems that are causing the dysfunction. If the cause is physical, the treatment will likely be medication or mechanical aids. If it is psychological, counseling, therapy, behavior modification and education may work. Some people with sexual dysfunction may have both physical and psychological causes, and in that case, both will need to be treated.
