How Running Or Jogging May Improve Sexual Life

How regular exercise affects and improve sexual life.

To improve sexual life, you don’t need a scientist to tell you that sex can be a sweat-drenched workout. But how many calories does a good romp really burn? A recent study measured energy expended during sex versus running and found that we get our hearts pumping and muscles cranking enough during sex for it to be considered moderate exercise.

The researchers recruited 21 healthy, active, heterosexual couples in their early 20s to jog on treadmills at about 65 percent of their maximum heart rates for 30 minutes. While running, they wore lightweight armband monitors that measure energy expenditure in calories and exercise intensity or metabolic equivalent of task.

Next, the couples were asked to have sex once a week for a month while wearing the same armbands to track their calories and intensity during sexual activity. The duration of the sex varied, but the average session across all couples for the month was about 25 minutes. On average, the men burned 9.2 calories per minute while jogging (or about 230 calories for a 25-minute jog) and had a mean intensity of 8.5, compared to 4.2 calories per minute (105 calories per session) and 6 calories during sex. Women burned a little less, logging 7.1 calories per minute and 8.1 on the treadmill, 3.1 calories per minute, and 5.6 calories during sex.

Unsurprisingly, jogging for a half-hour taxed everyone’s bodies more than having sex – but the researchers were impressed at how much energy these people exerted during sex. According to study author Antony Karelis, the participants burned enough calories and reached high enough intensities for sex to be considered “moderate intensity” exercise, the equivalent of walking briskly. While it’s not on the level of doing wind sprints or 30-lap pool sessions, it can be said that sex can be a legit form of exercise.

Improve sexual life – Running Can Boost Your Libido

Sex is good for you, but it isn’t always exercised. It points out that sometimes sex isn’t hot and heavy and doesn’t always last long, so you can’t count every quickie as a moderate workout. “Sex should not replace regular exercise.” Rather, sex and exercise should both be incorporated into your routine on a regular basis. Studies show that each improves health, so the combination of the two leads to a greater quality of life.

Sex; physical and mental health benefits are well documented, but does running increase testosterone levels?

Higher testosterone levels are associated with a plethora of health benefits including boosted bone density, increased muscle growth and improved mood, so it’s easy to see why people might want more of the hormone. Weightlifting is usually touted as the best way to boost your testosterone levels – but could hop on one of the best treadmills have the same effect?

How Exercise Makes Sex Better

To answer this, it’s important to first understand what testosterone is and the many impacts this hormone has on the body.

It’s probably a word you’ve heard many times before, but what is testosterone?

Testosterone is a steroid hormone responsible for the development of what’s called secondary sexual characteristics, or changes that occur during puberty.

“For males it causes your larynx to thicken and your voice to deepen facial and pubic hair growth, and development of the penis and testis.”

Crucially, for those interested in the link between testosterone levels and athletic performance, it also helps build muscle and bone strength, as well as drives libido and the production of sperm.

It is often called the male sex hormone, and is made by the testis; it is also present at lower levels in women, where it’s made by the adrenal gland and ovaries. In women, it’s responsible for libido and arousal, and also plays a role in developing muscle and bone strength.

Higher testosterone levels have been associated with boosted bone density, increased muscle growth and improved mood. It’s tempting to think that more must be better, but that is not the case. Having too much testosterone can lead to issues such as skin and hair problems, and prostate enlargement. It can lead to reduced fertility, poorer heart health due to weight gain, and higher cholesterol and blood pressure.

Exercise: It’s Good For Your Sex Life Too

It is important to maintain healthy levels of testosterone, as both lower and higher levels are associated with ill effects.

When your testosterone levels are optimal, it’s associated with better energy, heart health, mood, memory, and libido as well as stronger bones and a leaner body mass. Testosterone is one of the most potent naturally secreted androgenic-anabolic hormones, and its biological effects include the promotion of muscle growth. In muscle, testosterone stimulates protein synthesis and inhibits protein degradation; combined, these effects account for the promotion of muscle hypertrophy by testosterone.

And while higher testosterone levels have thus been shown to benefit those looking to achieve muscular hypertrophy, they can also positively impact the skeletal system. Testosterone is important for bone density, which decreases with age in men. Ageing makes your bones weaker and increases the risk of osteoporosis. A maintained level of testosterone reduces this risk.

Running is a great way to improve cardiovascular fitness and aid in weight loss, but many worry that pounding the pavement will take a toll on their back. However, a recent study may put those fears to rest.
