According to studies, ayurvedic medicine for sexual dysfunctions, have shown outstanding results for treating sexual problems. As per classics, by proper use of these vajikarana durgs, one becomes endowed with good physique, strength, complexion, sexually exhilarated and sexually potent. Talmakhana, popularly known as Kokilaksha in vernacular term is an extensive Rasayanic herb. In Ayurveda, it is described as Ikshura, Ikshugandha, Culli and Kokilasha, which means “having eyes like the Indian Cuckoo”. All parts of this plant are used (leaves, seeds, root) for medicinal purposes. Talmkahana which goes by the scientific name Asteracantha longifolia is a rejuvenative herb that grows to a height of 3-5 feet and is commonly found thriving well in the fields, marshlands and water sources all over India. Coming from the family Acanthaceae, the plant is erect and robust and an annual herb featuring pale to purple flowers and oblanceolate leaves. It usually bores oblong fruits with 4 to 8 seeded in it.

Advantages of Talmakhana in Sex Problems-

1) Male Sexual Dysfunction– 

Sexual dysfunction in men can be in the form of loss of libido i.e., having no inclination towards a sexual act. There can also be a low erection time or semen expelled soon after a sexual activity. This is also referred to as ‘early discharge or premature ejaculation. Taking Kokilaksha helps to correct male sexual dysfunction and also improve stamina. This is due to its Vajikarana (aphrodisiac) property.

It has powerful spermatogenic properties that are extremely beneficial for treating oligospermia (i.e. low sperm count), hypospermia (low volume of semen), asthenozoospermia (i.e. sperm motility), teratospermia (i.e. abnormal sperm shape) and enhances spermatogenesis (i.e. sperm production). The abundance of antioxidants improves the production of male hormones like testosterone and luteinizing hormone. It also treats conditions like Erectile Dysfunction and Premature Ejaculation.

2) Prevents Anxiety and Depression-

Talmakhana is extremely useful for treating different types of psychotic problems like depression, dementia, etc. It normalizes the vata and pitta doshas in the body which in turn keeps the serotonin level under control and helps to reduce various symptoms of anxiety which includes restlessness, uneasiness, cold hands, and feet, etc. This helps in reducing mental stress and anxiety and stimulates the hormones for increasing libido.

Working of Talmakhana on doshas in body- 

Talmakhana is blessed with madhura rasa (sweet taste) and Guru (heavy) and snigdha (oily) gunas. It has shita virya (cold potency) and madhura vipaka (pungent metabolic property). It aggravates the kapha doshas (earth and water) and pacifies vata (air) and Pitta (fire and air) doshas. Owing to these essential properties, the herb has a positive effect on the various dhatus (i.e. body tissues) which are rasa (i.e. Plasma), Rakta (i.e. blood), mamsa (i.e. Muscles), asthi (i.e. Bones) and shukra (i.e. reproductive fluids). Contributing as a great vajikarana drug.

Talmakhana Dosage

The dosage of talmakhana may vary from person to person depending upon the age, body strength, effects on appetite, severity, and condition of the patient. It is firmly recommended to consult an ayurvedic doctor or practitioner as he or she would evaluate the patient’s indications, past medical conditions and prescribe an effective dose for a specific period.

Talmakhana churna/ powder –  ¼ – ½ tsp twice a day.

Talmakhana gutika/ capsule – 1-2 capsule twice a day.

How to use Talmakhana-

1. Talmakhana Powder-

a. Take 1/4-½ teaspoon of Talmakhana Powder.

b. Add honey or milk to it.

c. Have it after lunch and dinner.

2. Talmakhana Kwath-

a. Take 1/2-1 teaspoon of Talmakhana Powder.

b. Add 2 cups of water and boil it.

c. Wait for 5-10 minutes or till the volume reduces to ½ a cup.

d. This is Talmakhana kwath.

e. Take 2-3 teaspoon of this kwath.

f. Add the same quantity of water to it.

g. Drink 1-2 times a day preferably after meals.

3. Talmakhana Capsule

a. Take 1-2 capsules of Talmakhana.

b. Swallow it with lukewarm water 1-2 times a day.

Talmakhana precautions-

Avoid talmakhana or if necessary use it under medical supervision during breastfeeding and pregnancy.
